Why Nigeria Passport Ranking Is Trending: Henley Says 90th With 44 Countries, IziVisa Says 181st With 24 Countries

If you saw “Nigeria’s Passport Plunges From 90th to 181st” trending today, here’s the full context.

Two different passport rankings are being mixed up online.

What the latest IziVisa ranking says:

According to data published on IziVisa.com, Nigeria is now ranked 181st out of 196 countries. IziVisa says Nigerians can travel to 24 countries visa-free, obtain visas on arrival in 16 countries, and access 43 countries through electronic visas. IziVisa explains it ranks passports by how many destinations you can access without getting a visa beforehand, counting visa-free, visa-on-arrival, and e-visa together.

In that ranking, the United Arab Emirates leads 2026 with access to 185 of 198 destinations, followed by Switzerland in second, while Luxembourg, Malta, Denmark, Spain and Finland also feature at the top.

The report claims Nigeria’s visa-free score fell from 44 destinations in July to 24 now.

What the Henley Passport Index said in July 2026:

Separately, the July 2026 Henley Passport Index — published by Henley & Partners using IATA data and covering 227 destinations — placed Nigeria 90th out of 199 passports, with visa-free access to 44 destinations. In that same index, Nigeria shared its position with DR Congo and Turkmenistan.

For comparison in Africa on Henley: South Africa ranked 49th with 101 destinations, Botswana 61st with 81, Morocco 67th with 71, Kenya 68th with 70, and Ghana 70th with 67.

So did Nigeria really plunge from 90 to 181?

Not exactly. The Henley Index and IziVisa Index are two different systems. They count countries differently, use different total destinations, and weight visa-free vs e-visa differently. Henley is the global standard used by governments and airlines; IziVisa is a newer travel-site ranking.

What is true is that Nigeria’s travel freedom remains weak — whether you use 44 destinations (Henley) or 24 visa-free (IziVisa), it is far behind South Africa’s 101 or Ghana’s 67. And Nigerians online are asking: Why is the Giant of Africa’s passport so weak?

For now, if you want to travel visa-free with a Nigerian passport, your options are limited to mostly West Africa, some Caribbean and Pacific islands, and a few Asian countries — not Europe, US, UK, or Canada without a visa.
