Mexico has finally approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.
The approval, known as “agrément”, was delivered by José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, to Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The posting covers Mexico with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, ending 8 months of uncertainty.
Former presidential aide and political commentator Reno Omokri has confirmed that the Mexican government has approved his appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador.
Omokri announced it himself on X on Tuesday: “To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Honduras, and the Republic of Nicaragua.”

The diplomatic note was handed over to Ambassador Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
This ends eight months of uncertainty and online dragging. Since President Tinubu nominated Omokri as part of the ambassadorial list, critics had questioned whether Mexico would accept him, citing his controversial past statements and political commentaries. For months, no agrément came, and social media was buzzing that Mexico had rejected him.
Today, that narrative has collapsed.
Reno, who served as aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and is known for his #RenosNuggets and fierce defense of the current administration online, will now represent Nigeria in Mexico City, with concurrent accreditation covering three other Central American countries — Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
It is a big diplomatic win for him. Mexico is a major non-NATO ally of the US, G20 member, and a key player in Latin America — and for Nigeria, it’s a chance to deepen South-South cooperation.
From Twitter influencer to Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary — Reno Omokri’s journey just took a new turn.
