- PDP chieftain Segun Showunmi has warned Peter Obi, and other opposition figures planning to transmit 2027 results independently.
- He said whatever INEC gives is what Nigerians will take, as only INEC has the constitutional right to declare a winner.
- He warned that anyone who announces a different result risks being jailed like MKO Abiola in 1993.
If you thought the 2027 election talk would be calm, think again. It has already started, and it is already heated.
PDP chieftain and convener of The Alternative, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has sent a strong warning to Peter Obi and other Nigerians planning to independently transmit election results in 2027 to checkmate rigging. In a viral video interview on Saturday, Showunmi said bluntly — whatever INEC gives you is what you will take.
His reason? According to him, the Nigerian constitution only allows INEC to declare results. “I heard some people saying they would release their own election results before INEC,” he said. “Let me warn them — when MKO Abiola declared himself winner in 1993, he was thrown into jail.”

One thing that Nigerians must be happy about is what the Tinubu’s presidency has revealed about a lot of his kinsmen, some of whom a lot of Nigerians saw as superstars before now.

For context, this warning comes as Peter Obi’s camp and other opposition groups have been pushing for citizen-led, technology-driven parallel transmission of results — taking pictures of polling unit results and uploading them independently to prevent rigging, like what happened in 2023. Many young Nigerians on X support that idea because they don’t trust INEC after the last election.
But Showunmi is saying it is illegal. Only INEC can declare. Announce any other result, and you will be treated like Abiola — arrested and jailed.
Of course, the statement has divided X. Some are supporting Showunmi, saying you cannot create a parallel government and that such moves can cause chaos. Others, including human rights lawyer Prof. Chidi Odinkalu who reacted to the video, are saying Showunmi is trying to scare Nigerians from holding INEC accountable.
What do you think — is independent result transmission a necessary check against rigging, or is it a recipe for crisis like Abiola’s case?
